Steam Powered
The Steam of the Smokies is alive and well in the Great Smoky Mountains offering year round passenger excursions with the thrill of rolling through Western North Carolina’s hills and valleys behind a piece of history.The #1702 locomotive dates back to 1942, where the engine’s construction was an official commissioned WWII Steam Engine plan. It is of the world’s largest engine class and is one of two remaining in the United States. This converted oil burning engine began its year restoration process in 2015 RE-debuting in 2016 and delighting passengers year after year. There’s nothing like a ride behind steam!


Diesel Powered
True locomotive power is on display with our diesel work horse engines! Our fleet of locomotives GP9’s , GP7, GP30 and GP38-3 are the backbone of our railroad. Each locomotive has the power to pull our full passenger trains through these beautiful mountains, arriving right on time! Enjoy one of our scenic excursions with one of these bad boys leading the way!

The Tuckasegee (tuck-uh-SEE-jee) River Excursion includes an 1 hour and 20 minute layover in the historic town of Dillsboro, where you’ll find more than 50 shops, restaurants, a brewery, and country inns. There is time to shop, snack, and visit the many unique shops before returning to Bryson City.

Coach Class : Coach Class features open seating in an enclosed car, windows that can be opened for fresh air and taking photos, and are heated and have ceiling fans. When we reach the end of the line, we will invite all guests in this class to switch sides with their neighbors so that everyone will have the opportunity to take pictures from a new perspective on the opposite side of the train.
